Suno duets that keep the right singer on each part

Why Suno gives the male part to the female voice (or both parts to one), and the lyric tags, Styles wording and settings that keep each singer where you put them.

A duet is the fastest way to burn credits in Suno. You write two parts, and the song comes back with one singer doing both, the wrong voice on the second verse, or a third "backing" voice nobody asked for. People in the forums report dozens of rolls chasing a single working duet.

Most of it comes down to how the parts are labelled. Suno can only keep singers apart if every line says, in words it understands, who's singing it.

Why duets go wrong

  • The tags don't carry gender. [Verse 2 - Him] or [Singer 2] tells Suno a part changed, but not to whom. It fills the gap with whichever voice it has been using.
  • Styles describes one vocal. If Styles says "soulful female vocal" and nothing else, that's the only voice the band was told about.
  • The setting forces one gender. A Vocal Gender of Female or Male tells the model to use that voice throughout.
  • Echoes in parentheses. A line like (I know, I know) under one singer's part, with no tag, often gets sung by that same singer — or by a new voice you never defined.

Label every part with gender

Use a tag that names the singer and their gender, on its own line, every time the voice changes:

[Verse 1 | close and conversational]
[Singer A, female]
You left your number on the coaster
I kept it like a ticket stub

[Singer B, male]
I wrote it twice in case you lost one
Didn't know you'd lose the club

[Chorus | both voices, full band]
[Both]
Say it like you meant it
Say it like you meant it the first time

A few rules that keep this reliable:

  • Same names all song. Singer A is always female, Singer B is always male. Don't switch to "Him/Her" halfway.
  • Tag at every hand-over, even when the same singer comes back after one line.
  • Keep traded lines short — around six syllables — so each singer gets a clear phrase rather than half a sentence.
  • Use [Both] for lines you want sung together, rather than hoping a chorus becomes a duet on its own.

An answer voice instead of a full duet

Sometimes you want one lead with a second voice answering — a call-and-response, a male voice under a female lead. Tag the answer voice on its own line, then hand back to the lead:

[Chorus | stacked lead, male runs answer]
[Female lead]
Tell me you're staying for one more song
[Male vocal]
One more song
[Female lead]
Tell me you're staying, it won't take long

Give the answer voice a part in every chorus and at least once in each verse. If it only appears once, Suno tends to forget it exists by the second chorus.

Bind both voices in Styles

The lyric tags say who sings when. Styles has to say who the singers are, by gender and timbre:

Duet: Singer A female, airy and close-miked; Singer B male, warm baritone, dry. Trade lines in the verses, harmonise in the chorus.

Name the answer voice the same way ("male runs answer the lead") and mention it in the cue for each section it sings in. And don't put the second singer's gender in Exclude — male vocals in Exclude will remove exactly the voice you need.

Set Vocal Gender to Auto

For a duet or any song with an answer voice, leave Vocal Gender on Auto (verify the name in your composer). Forcing Female or Male tells Suno to override your tags.

A duet checklist

  • Every voice change tagged with name and gender: [Singer A, female], [Singer B, male], [Both]
  • Traded lines around six syllables
  • An answer voice tagged on its own line, in every chorus and every verse
  • Styles names both voices by gender and timbre
  • No singer's gender in Exclude
  • Vocal Gender on Auto

Or let it be built that way

The free lyric checker catches the structural slips that confuse Suno, such as bare section headers, directions in parentheses and a missing ending. Session Sheet writes duets with gendered tags on every part, binds both voices in Styles, checks that an answer voice never goes quiet, and sets Vocal Gender for you. It's free to start.
