Within a week of v6 launching on September 9, 2026, r/SunoAI filled up with the same handful of complaints. The vocals sound polite. Everything sounds mixed by the same engineer. The song is great for two minutes and then loses the plot. It ignores half of what I asked for. Can we have v5.5 back?
You can't have v5.5 back. Suno retired the older models when v6 rolled out. But most of these complaints have causes you can fix, and a lot of them come from prompts that worked on v5.5 and work differently now.
What changed under the hood
Three things matter for prompting:
v6 is a new model, trained differently. Suno says it was trained from scratch on licensed material from its label partners (Warner, BMG and Believe) plus preference data. Whatever you think of that, it means the model's defaults have moved. The "sound" v5.5 reached for when you were vague isn't the one v6 reaches for.
v6 follows more of the prompt. That's the good news and the bad news. A detailed prompt gets more of itself into the song. A vague prompt gets v6's confident average, which is where "polite" and "flat" come from.
There are three v6s. v6 is the controlled one, v6-wild takes liberties, and v6-mini is the free-tier, faster variant. If your old prompts relied on v5.5 surprising you, you may want v6-wild for sketching rather than v6.
"It sounds flat and generic"
Cause: the prompt describes a vibe, not a band. "Dark emotional pop with a catchy chorus" gives v6 nothing specific, so it fills in its most likely version of dark emotional pop.
Fix: name the parts. Tempo. One production era phrase. What the drums play, what the bass does, one hero instrument. How the vocal is delivered in the verse versus the chorus. Our genre prompt pages show this for 90 genres; compare one with your current Styles and count how many actual instruments yours names.
Cause: quality words. "Radio-ready, professional, high quality, polished" tells v6 to aim for the middle of the road.
Fix: replace them with placement words. "Vocal dry and close, sub mono, hats wide" tells the mix where things go.
"It's great for two minutes, then it wanders"
This is the most common complaint, and the most fixable.
Cause: no ending. v6 can run up to eight minutes a generation. With no ending in the lyrics and no ending in Styles, it keeps going: a third verse nobody wrote, a key change, a long fade.
Fix: end the lyrics on an ending header, [End | clean ending], and end Styles with an ending sentence: "Ends cold after the final chorus." Plan an arrangement of about three minutes at your BPM (bars × 240 ÷ BPM is seconds; the free song length calculator does the sums and writes the headers). A pop song with two verses, three choruses and a bridge fits comfortably.
Cause: sections the model can't see. [Repeat Chorus] and (x2) leave v6 guessing how long the song is.
Fix: write every section out, word for word.
"It ignores my Styles"
Cause: Variety above zero. In v6, Variety lets Suno rework your Styles before it generates. For exploring, that's the point. For a planned song, it's the most common reason a precise prompt vanishes. Open the song details: if the Styles Suno shows aren't the ones you pasted, this is why.
Fix: Variety at 0 for a final take, My Taste off, no Magic Wand, and Style Influence raised for a long prompt. The full list is in why Suno rewrote your Styles.
Cause: a v5.5-style prompt over the limit. Long tag lists push the important parts past the point where Styles stops counting (about 1,000 characters, with the start weighted most).
Fix: genre, tempo and feel first; about 800 characters total; negatives moved to Exclude.
"The vocals sound polite"
Cause: no delivery direction per section. One vocal description in Styles gets applied evenly to the whole song.
Fix: put the delivery in each lyric header and change it across the song: [Verse 1 | low and close, almost spoken], [Chorus | full voice, belted, doubled], [Bridge | whispered]. Contrast is what makes a vocal sound like a performance. Say the same cues again in the arrangement sentence of Styles.
Cause: lines too long to sing with feeling. When every line is fourteen syllables, the singer has to rush, and rushing sounds flat.
Fix: verse lines under about ten syllables, hook lines under eight. The free lyric checker counts them.
Converting your v5.5 prompts
If you have a library of prompts that worked on v5.5, convert them rather than starting over. The usual changes: split tag lists into a lead genre tag and sentences about parts, move [Genre: …] meta lines out of the lyrics into Styles, move every "no …" into Exclude, add cues to bare headers, write out repeats, add an ending. The free prompt upgrader does that in your browser, and our guide to converting old prompts walks through each change.
So is v6 worse?
For vague prompts, v6 can sound more generic than v5.5 did, because it does more literally what you asked, and a vague prompt asks for the average. For detailed prompts, it follows more of what you wrote than any Suno model before it. If your takes sound flat, the fix is usually more specific direction, not a different model.
